1. Do I need shots to visit Shikwaru or any of its other concessions or venues in South Africa?

The only shots that you need for Shikwaru are tetanus and hepatitis.  You do not need any other shots.  However if you are going into an area with Malaria either before, during or after your hunt at Shikwaru then you most certainly will need a Malaria shot or possibly other shots as well.  As always it is best to ask your physician for advice and do what he says.

2.  Is it safe to go to South Africa?

Yes.  At this time there is no political unrest nor any animosity towards people from other countries.  Of course you must be prudent in places that you might visit on your own just as if you would take a vacation in our own country you would not visit certain questionable area either.  It is always best to ask your safari booking agent, PH or someone at the camp about personal safety.

3.  Can I use my credit cards there and how will the exchange work?

You can use all major credit cards in South Africa.  The exchange will be at the current rate the minute that you present your card and it will be indicated on your statement what that exchange rate was and how much the transaction was at the time.

4.  Do I need extra insurance?

Every person can always use extra insurance and our advice is for anyone traveling abroad or going on any type of safari is to purchase extra insurance.  If you are a member of SCI (Safari Club International) then you can go to their insurance page by clicking here and deciding which insurance you need.   If you are not an SCI member you should probably consider joining if not for the great magazine and benefits then just because all of the membership fees go to help the world and its environment.  If you have an insurance agent that can help you in this area then use that person but first at least take a look at the SCI page for information on the different type of insurance available.  If nothing else then purchase at least travel protection.  An ounce of prevention, pound of cure.....

The gun laws in South Africa are stated as such: 
No one may use a fire arm which after it has been discharged, automatically reloads and fires when the trigger is pulled or held in a discharged position.  A fire arm which discharged a rim-fire cartridge of a caliber of 5.6 millimeters or smaller. So you may use a rifle, muzzle loader, or a hand gun of a caliber larger than 5.6 mm for rim fire.
