Taxidermy Issues

Most people have a taxidermist that they have used and trust with their trophies.  They have been recommended by others who have also used them as well.  But for those who do not know of a good taxidermist or don't know if they should have their trophies done in South Africa or done in the United States we offer a couple of recommendations.

First, you should do your homework on any taxidermist that you employ.  The two that we recommend  we have talked with and have seen their work.  This means that you should do the same.  Call, email or write to either or both of them and make your decision based on information that you have gleaned.  Ubuntu Adventures does not receive any compensation from either of them if you should chose to use their services.  We just know the people and their work and how good it is.

Next you have to know about the import of trophies.  How it is done, where it is done and what happens when it's done.  There are different rules and regulations for the import of mounts and for the import of skins and horns.  For this you must go to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife website (link to the left).  There you will find out all about what you can import, how you can import it and of course what you can not import.  Every form is also available on their website.

Most taxidermist will help you with this.  Any good taxidermist will know the current laws, rules and regulations of most countries especially if they are international taxidermists.  They will know what can not be imported into what country and what will need to be quarantined before you can pick up your trophy.  By the time you shoot your trophy you should know exactly what will be happening with it after it is prepped by our skinners.

One of the big questions is should you have the trophy done in South Africa or in the United States.  Again, everyone has their own personal opinion.  Ubuntu Adventures believes that there are good and bad issues with both and must then leave it up to the individual hunter to make their own decision.  This is also why we give a recommendation to one in both the United States and one in South Africa.  You can contact them and ask them why you should have your trophy done either here or there.  Make your decision and stick with it.

One thing that should not play a major factor in your decision is cost.  Another is the time it takes to complete your trophy.  Good food takes time and so does a good trophy.  If you want a McDonalds hamburger hanging on your wall that is up to you.  Good taxidermists are probably all in the same ball park in both time and cost.

So here is the point at which you take over.  Either call both of the taxidermists that we recommend and make new friends or talk to someone that can recommend different taxidermists that are just as excellent in their work.
